COVID-19 Testing at the PCC

We currently offer several testing options to our patients, including rapid antigen tests, in-house PCR tests (with same-day results, subject to availability), and send-out PCR tests.   Symptomatic patients must be evaluated by a physician through a televisit or in-person visit in order to determine the most appropriate testing, and ensure that all questions are answered.

Rapid antigen tests are most helpful for symptomatic patients, with results ready in approximately 15-20 minutes.  Negative rapid antigen tests should be followed by a PCR, which is a more sensitive and accurate test.

Send-out PCR testing is available Monday-Saturday at our office, with a turnaround time of 24-48 hours depending on demand.

In-house PCR testing, with results available within a few hours, is currently available through our own CLIA- licensed laboratory.  If needed, tests for influenza and RSV can be run on the same sample.

Please see below for more information on our in-house rapid RT-PCR test:

As part of our commitment to provide the best possible medical care to our patients, the PCC is very happy to announce that we have completed the installation and verification of a state of the art rapid RT-PCR testing system in our in-house CLIA licensed laboratory. This system, which is used by many hospitals and clinical labs, allows us to provide PCR testing for COVID-19 and other viruses, such as influenza, with results generally available within a few hours. This means we can speed up the detection of COVID-19 and other illnesses to assist you and your PCC doctor in making the best decisions regarding care and prevention of spread-all in the safe and caring environment you trust.

How much does the test cost? The cost for the COVID-only test itself is $98.  It must be ordered by a provider after a televisit or office visit. Insurance will generally cover either all or a portion of these charges, but the amount is dependent on the actual services, reason for the testing and your insurance. For insurance plans that do not cover the expedited service, an additional charge of $30 will be assessed for same-day PCR testing; payment is due at the time of service.

The cost for the full viral panel, which includes COVID-19, influenza A/B and RSV is $180 and is also typically reimbursable by insurance; there is no additional surcharge for expedited service with this test.  This test is only appropriate for symptomatic patients.

Which type of test should I get?  The antigen test, which has often been called “the rapid test,” is appropriate for symptomatic patients in whom COVID-19 is suspected. The rapid antigen test is over 80% sensitive in detecting COVID illness, but should not be relied upon to rule out COVID, as false negatives may occur.  For this reason, a negative rapid antigen test is always followed by a PCR test.  For an asymptomatic patient, an antigen test is much less reliable and a PCR should always be performed.  Without insurance, the charge for the rapid antigen test is $51.
